Grants Ensure Safe Housing for Lower-Income Households

BISMARCK, ND – North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) announces the planned distribution of $240,000 through its Helping Housing Across North Dakota (Helping HAND) program.

“Helping HAND ensures that homes are safe and habitable for North Dakotans of modest means,” said Brandon Dettlaff, NDHFA executive director.

The 2025 Helping HAND grant distribution follows:

“Through Helping HAND, North Dakota Housing Finance Agency has provided over $7.1 million in grants that has leveraged more than $50 million and helped over 8,200 lower-income individuals and families across the state,” said Brandon Dettlaff, NDHFA executive director. “Roof replacement is the most common rehab project.”

Helping HAND grants address the needs of households with incomes that do not exceed 80 percent of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s median for the county in which the property is located. Grant recipients must provide a local match of 25 percent to access the program dollars.

NDHFA’s Helping HAND program began in 1993 and is funded with agency earnings. Grants are allocated to Community Action Agencies based on poverty level indicators, with dedicated funds earmarked for tribal housing authorities and non-profit organizations. Households in need of rehab assistance can contact a grant recipient for more information.

NDHFA is a self-supporting and mission-driven state agency dedicated to making housing affordable for all North Dakotans. The North Dakota Industrial Commission, consisting of Governor Kelly Armstrong as chairman, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and Attorney General Drew H. Wrigley, oversees the agency.
